About All That Shines Under The Dirt
originally started as The Flower Creep Project a community art action initiated by me at Andy as an ongoing effort to bring positive energy in the new art space ( former ripo-garage ) and connect to the people in the Detroit neighborhood.
For over 2 years I invited everybody, from the A/C installers to the homeless guy to the visitors to draw flowers on the floor and walls. The accumulation of flowers and energy inspired me to create All That Shines Under the Dirt. It is a giant forest of flowers selected from the drawings and reproduced with cans crashed by cars and found on the streets in Detroit.
Artist Statement:
All That Shines Under the Dirt
is what catches my eyes, sparks of light under the dirt, dormant energy lost (tossed) in space, traces of human behavior which I sense and have a desire to gather. I feel if I assemble all this energy together into a new form I will understand something about my surroundings and our human fragility. It’s also my desire to pick up the ugly, dirty, discarded, unwanted, disposable object and give it a second chance to be seen. The form this takes here - a flower forest - was inspired by the action of drawing chalk flowers on the floor and walls by kids, contractors, and guests at Andy.
